Ukrainian Air Assault Forces adopt VR simulators and drone killer training

The 199th Training Center of Ukraine's Air Assault Forces has integrated virtual reality simulators, including “Dronobiy” (drone killer) trainers, into its basic and specialized programs, Colonel Oleksandr Klymenko, Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the center, said in an interview with Ukrinform. The simulators allow troops to practice engaging aerial targets and operating anti-tank weapons without live ammunition. The center also expanded use of airsoft equipment in 2024 and is developing laser-based combat simulation systems.

The 199th Training Center of Ukraine's Air Assault Forces has integrated virtual reality simulators, including “Dronobiy” (drone killer) trainers, into its basic combined-arms and specialized training programs, Colonel Oleksandr Klymenko, Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of the center, said in an interview with Ukrinform.

“Over the past several years, the training center has been systematically implementing modern training technologies based on virtual reality and computer modeling. The main focus is on integrating simulators into basic combined-arms and specialized training programs,” Klymenko said.

According to him, “Dronobiy” simulators are used to train soldiers to engage aerial targets, including UAVs, without additional ammunition costs. Anti-tank weapon simulators, specifically the IT-4 and RPG-22 trainers, recreate real combat conditions. Multimedia shooting ranges help improve firearms training in environments that closely resemble actual battlefield conditions.

The center significantly expanded the use of airsoft equipment starting in 2024, enabling intensive exercises at locations where live weapons are limited or impossible, and allowing troops to practice small-unit tactics in urban areas and enclosed spaces.

Klymenko said the center has begun developing laser-based combat simulation systems, including Lasertag Mainz equipment. The laser system has been integrated into engineering training (mine-laying and demining simulations), tactical exercises (force-on-force drills with simulated casualty tracking), and firearms training (counter-UAV and FPV drone engagement drills).

Air defense personnel training, both theoretical and practical, has been fully transferred to specialized simulators, ensuring a high level of proficiency, the colonel added. Simulators for drone operators allow recruits to develop basic piloting, maneuvering, and navigation skills before conducting real flights.

“The introduction of all these tools helps improve personnel training, optimize the use of material resources, and ensure safety during exercises,” Klymenko emphasized.

The training center also conducts specialized training for unmanned ground vehicle operators. At the end of the basic combined-arms course, cadets participate in a comprehensive tactical exercise showing how robotic systems can be used for personnel evacuation and logistics missions.
