tr18Data centers become strategic geopolitical assets as energy access reshapes investment logic
An analysis by the Atlantic Council argues that data centers have evolved into strategic geopolitical assets due to their massive and growing energy demands, currently 400–600 TWh globally and projected to reach 800–1,000 TWh by the early 2030s. The shift from user proximity to energy access is driving investment toward energy-rich regions such as Northern Europe, Canada, and potentially Turkey. The piece outlines the hybrid energy model required (renewables, gas, nuclear) and warns that grid constraints, climate conditions, and supply chain disruptions are creating new vulnerabilities. Turkey's opportunity to become a regional data center and energy platform depends on strengthening grid infrastructure, regulatory predictability, and simplified permitting.
