Berlin's deterrence anxiety meets the bill at home
An FAZ analysis tied Putin's mid-May "Kinzhal and Oreshnik" warning to an arc of Russian escalation through Medvedev's February nuclear threat and Shoigu's April Baltic-airspace claim, and to Washington's reversal on Tomahawks in Germany — pushing CDU defence lead Kiesewetter to call for an Article 80a Spannungsfall. SPD chief Miersch ruled out extending the fuel-tax rebate; a study found immigrants face systemic housing discrimination; and the EU now hosts 4.3 million Ukrainian refugees under extended protection.

Putin's Kinzhal and Oreshnik warning, US Tomahawk reversal and an ISW April loss tally narrow Germany's deterrence window
Vladimir Putin on May 16 said Russia's missiles "have no equal" in the world and singled out the hypersonic Kinzhal and the medium-range Oreshnik as suited to strikes on Europe, the FAZ reported, the latest in a February-to-May arc of Russian threats that began with Dmitry Medvedev's nuclear warning to Ukraine's allies and ran through Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu's April invocation of a "right of self-defence" against Finland and the Baltic states. The Institute for the Study of War said Russia lost more territory than it gained in April and is struggling to replace its dead even as the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's "Monitor Luftkrieg Ukraine" tracks the construction of a fresh Russian missile reserve. Berlin is now seeking a European replacement for the Tomahawks Washington has reportedly walked back from stationing in Germany, with CDU defence policy lead Roderich Kiesewetter calling on the Bundestag to declare an Article 80a Spannungsfall to accelerate rearmament.
SPD leader Miersch rules out extending fuel tax rebate, warns of Iran war oil risks
SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch has ruled out extending Germany's two-month fuel tax rebate beyond June, calling the across-the-board measure a "Gießkanne" (watering can) that is no long-term solution. In an interview with the Augsburger Allgemeine, Miersch warned that the Iran war could disrupt oil prices and supply chains, citing uncertainty over actions by Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu. He proposed structural tax relief targeting low- and middle-income earners as an alternative.

de28Study finds immigrants face discrimination and housing disadvantage in Germany
The German Expert Council on Integration and Migration (SVR) published its 2026 annual report on housing and participation, documenting that immigrants and people with immigrant background face disproportionate disadvantages in the housing market, including smaller, overcrowded apartments, lower homeownership rates, higher rent burdens, and racial discrimination. The report notes that in 2024, around 532,000 people were unhoused, with 86% of homeless shelter residents being non-German citizens. The SVR proposes anonymizing the first stage of rental applications to counter discrimination. The findings underscore how the housing crisis deepens social inequality and hinders integration, education, and labor market access. The report also warns that social segregation is increasing, with poverty and immigration becoming intertwined, and that the housing shortage of about 1.4 million affordable units is exacerbating integration challenges.

de25EU Hosts 4.3 Million Ukrainian Refugees Under Extended Temporary Protection
Eurostat data shows over 4.3 million Ukrainians remain under temporary protection in the EU, with Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic hosting the largest numbers. The overall number decreased by nearly 69,000 in March, but experts attribute this to administrative changes rather than mass returns. The EU's temporary protection mechanism has been extended until March 2027.

de23CSU warns against 'social coldness' in German nursing care reform
Klaus Holetschek, head of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament, has warned the German federal government against a nursing care reform proposal that would stretch staggered subsidies for nursing home residents over a longer period. In an article for Focus magazine, he argued that while this would save several billion euros in nursing care insurance, it would come massively at the expense of those affected, calling it a step toward 'social coldness' and a 'classic shifting yard' that could force up to 50 percent of care recipients to rely on welfare and deplete their private savings. The Caritas association also opposed further financial burdens on the elderly. The reform's draft bill, originally due in mid-May, has been delayed and is now scheduled for cabinet approval on May 27.

de13Dead humpback whale off Denmark confirmed as 'Timmy' after Baltic Sea stranding
Divers confirmed that a dead humpback whale found off the Danish island of Anholt is 'Timmy,' the same whale that spent weeks stranded off Germany's Baltic coast. Identification was made possible by retrieving a tracking device attached by rescuers. The whale's death has reignited debate over the rescue operation, with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's environment minister Till Backhaus defending the decision to attempt a private rescue despite warnings from marine experts.
