UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday condemned a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego that killed three people, including a security guard, and called for a full investigation into the attack.

Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric delivered the statement at a news conference, saying Guterres “strongly condemns yesterday's deadly attack on a mosque in San Diego, California, in which three people were killed.” The shooting occurred on Monday.

Guterres “reaffirms that attacks on places of worship are particularly heinous,” Dujarric said, stressing “the urgent need to confront hatred and intolerance in all their forms.” The secretary-general expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said he “stands in solidarity with the Muslim community.”

Law enforcement officials said two suspects died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. The attack was the second deadly shooting at a San Diego mosque in as many days, following a May 18 incident in which two teenagers killed three people in what authorities described as a hate crime.
