Trump border czar Tom Homan threatens to surge ICE agents into New York City

Tom Homan, the Trump administration's border czar, said Monday he has reviewed a plan to deploy a surge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to New York City, warning the city will see "more ICE agents than you've ever seen."

Homan said in a Fox News interview that he is following through on a promise made to New York Governor Kathy Hochul after she signed a bill at the end of last month barring state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in New York jails.

"I made her a promise: you're going to see more ICE agents than you've ever seen in New York City, and it's coming," Homan said. "I just reviewed an operational plan."

The threat comes as millions are expected to visit the region for the NBA finals, featuring the New York Knicks, and the FIFA World Cup final, which is taking place about 10 miles outside the city in New Jersey. Immigrant rights advocates have issued travel warnings for the 10 million visitors expected for the World Cup, warning they risk "serious rights violations" including "arbitrary denial of entry and risk of arrest, detention and/or deportation."

At least 18 people have died this year in ICE custody. In January, during an enforcement surge in Minneapolis, ICE officers killed two U.S. citizens, Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, in a matter of weeks.

Homan has repeatedly threatened to send more ICE personnel to New York and other Democrat-run sanctuary cities that limit cooperation between local agencies and federal immigration authorities, though such a move has so far yet to materialize in New York.
