China and US pledge to coordinate diplomatic efforts to end Ukraine and Middle East wars

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China and the US have agreed to coordinate diplomatic leverage to end the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, following a two-day summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Beijing. Wang stated that both capitals are investing “significant efforts” to spearhead immediate peace negotiations, and that Beijing is abandoning its hands-off posture on the Ukraine crisis. The announcement comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on May 19 for a state visit.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China and the United States have agreed to coordinate their diplomatic leverage to end the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, following a two-day bilateral summit in Beijing between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.

Wang Yi confirmed that both capitals are investing “significant efforts” to spearhead immediate peace negotiations, according to a report by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. The announcement signals Beijing’s willingness to abandon its hands-off posture on the Ukraine crisis and play an active, collaborative role in brokering a diplomatic settlement.

“Complex issues do not have simple solutions, and peace talks cannot be achieved overnight,” Wang Yi stated. “As both China and the United States are ready to maintain communication and play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis, we hope for a swift conclusion to the fighting.”

The joint diplomatic push comes at a critical juncture. US-brokered peace initiatives for Ukraine have been frozen since the outbreak of the US-Israeli war with Iran on Feb. 28. By aligning Washington’s pressure on Kyiv with Beijing’s economic leverage over Moscow – as the primary buyer of Russian fossil fuels amid Western sanctions – the two superpowers are attempting to force both combatants to the negotiating table.

Turning to the Middle East, Wang Yi called on the United States, Israel, and regional states to firmly adhere to the fragile ceasefires currently in place in the Persian Gulf. He stressed that disputes over Iran’s nuclear development and the maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz must be resolved through multilateral negotiations, not renewed hostilities. Trump and Xi reached a baseline agreement during their closed-door sessions that Iran must be prevented from acquiring nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

While Wang Yi painted a picture of cooperative diplomacy, Trump’s departure from Beijing left regional friction over Taiwan. Trump publicly warned Taiwan against declaring formal independence and labeled US arms sales to Taipei as a “bargaining chip” to secure trade concessions from Beijing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on May 19 for a two-day state visit to sign a new “strategic cooperation” declaration with Xi. Analysts suggested that Wang Yi’s statements on a swift, negotiated end to the war were intended to signal to the Kremlin that China’s economic lifeline is tied to an expectation of diplomatic flexibility when Putin lands in the Chinese capital.
