Ukraine Recaptures 400 Sq Km, Hardens Northern Border
Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi told Militarnyi that Ukrainian offensive actions had overtaken Russian ones by 14 May, as counterattacks recovered more than 400 sq km in the south and most of Kupiansk — the largest gains since the Kursk incursion. The SBU's Alpha unit struck a Russian FSB headquarters in occupied Kherson, destroying a Pantsir-S1 system and inflicting about 100 casualties. Kyiv launched an 'unprecedented' security operation across five northern regions and President Zelenskyy visited Slavutych to warn Belarus.
The 400 square kilometres of southern territory Ukraine claims to have recaptured since winter, together with most of the eastern city of Kupiansk and settlements in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast taken since late April, are the largest Ukrainian territorial gains since the Kursk incursion of August 2024 — an Institute for the Study of War assessment Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi paired with his own claim, made to Militarnyi on 15 May, that Ukrainian offensive actions have outnumbered Russian ones since 14 May. Syrskyi separately told the EU Military Committee that the Armed Forces are shifting from a war of attrition to an asymmetric strategy built on deep-strike drone operations and air-defence priority, the doctrinal frame for the figures Maj. Robert Brovdi ("Magyar") of Unmanned Systems Forces released the same day: 19,203 Russian personnel struck by Ukrainian drones in the first nineteen days of May, on track for more than 34,000 drone-inflicted casualties by month's end, excluding artillery and ground combat. Russia's Q1 2026 contract intake of 70,500 — roughly 23,500 per month — sat below the monthly quota of 33,500 to 34,600.
The day's most concrete strike came in occupied Kherson. The SBU's Special Operations Center Alpha used drones to hit a Russian FSB headquarters in the village of Henicheska Hirka on Thursday, destroying a Pantsir-S1 air-defence system and inflicting roughly 100 Russian casualties, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in his afternoon address. Elsewhere along the line, spokesperson Viktor Trehubov reported that Ukrainian forces have pinned Russian troops near the border in the Velykyi Burluk direction and retaken two settlements over the past month, restoring the frontline to where it stood about a year ago; the General Staff registered 76 combat engagements by 16:00 on 21 May, with the heaviest fighting in the Pokrovsk sector (24 attacks) and Huliaipole (19). Russian strikes on Dnipro injured 11 civilians on the same day, including a 13-year-old boy, and damaged multiple apartment buildings.
The northern axis ran alongside the southern push. The SBU and Defense Forces launched what Kyiv described as an "unprecedented" enhanced-security operation in Chernihiv, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Volyn and Rivne — the five regions that share borders with Russia and Belarus — covering counter-intelligence, anti-sabotage, intensified inspections and temporary restrictions. The State Border Guard Service said engineering works and fortification construction along the entire Belarus border are continuing, with mine-explosive barriers being installed along the more than 1,000 km of front from Volyn to Chernihiv. President Zelenskyy visited Slavutych in northern Ukraine and met with hromada leaders from Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts to discuss those defences, warning Belarus that any aggression — including the Russia-Belarus axis through the Bryansk region he flagged on 20 May — would carry consequences.
On the diplomatic track, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is ready for a renewed round of trilateral peace talks with US and EU involvement, citing productive May contacts with US officials and the prior Abu Dhabi (January) and February rounds.
