Ukraine Truce Fails as Drones Strike 780 Times in 24 Hours
Kyiv's Office of the President told Suspilne that Putin's claim Ukraine refused a 1,000-for-1,000 POW swap "does not correspond to reality" and depends on Washington as guarantor. Russia struck Zaporizhzhia 780 times in 24 hours of the May 9-11 truce — 598 UAVs, 174 artillery, 1 killed, 3 injured across 33 settlements; Dnipropetrovsk drones wounded a 23-year-old rescuer and a three-year-old; four were hit in Kherson. ISW says Moscow used the pause for rotations. The NYT tracked Russia's slowest gains since 2023; the Geran-5 cruise missile debuted in a virtual Red Square parade.
Ukraine spent Sunday inside a truce that has not actually stopped the fighting. Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia Oblast 780 times in 24 hours of the declared May 9-11 ceasefire — 598 UAVs, mostly FPV drones, eight MLRS volleys and 174 artillery strikes across 33 settlements, killing one civilian and injuring three, the regional military administration reported. In Dnipropetrovsk, drones wounded a 23-year-old rescue worker on the way to assist residents of Myrove hromada in Nikopol district and a three-year-old girl in Synelnykove district, taken to hospital in moderate condition. Across the river Kherson region took FPV-drone and UAV-dropped munitions hits in Kherson city and Komyshany; four civilians were injured, including a 53-year-old Kherson City Council employee. In Sumy Oblast a 46-year-old man wounded by a drone strike on a Hlukhiv-hromada grain truck on 3 May died in hospital, while a fresh strike on a car in Znob-Novhorodske hromada on 9 May left another man, 47, injured. The Institute for the Study of War, looking across the line, said Russia spent the truce's first day rotating units, reinforcing and resupplying for future offensives — and noted no 1,000-for-1,000 POW swap had taken place.
That swap is now the centre of the day's diplomacy. After Vladimir Putin claimed in a state-media interview after the May 9 Victory Day parade that Ukraine had refused a 500-prisoner exchange tabled by Russia on May 5 and "went off the radar," Ukraine's Office of the President told Suspilne the account "does not correspond to reality." "Active contacts on this issue are currently ongoing," the source said, with the deal hinging on Washington acting as guarantor of the Trump-brokered "1,000-for-1,000" framework. Backbencher Catherine West's parallel pressure on Keir Starmer in London and a phone call between Volodymyr Zelensky and Finland's Alexander Stubb on European-US coordination underline how much of Ukraine's negotiating leverage now runs through allied capitals rather than the front itself.
On the longer trajectory, The New York Times documented Russia's slowest territorial gains since 2023, with trackers recording net losses in some months this year. At the current rate, Russia would need more than three decades to seize the rest of Donbas — undercutting Putin's case to Donald Trump that Russian forces are heading towards an inevitable battlefield resolution. Russia's response on the symbolic side was the Geran-5, a new jet-powered cruise missile unveiled during a Red Square parade that this year took place virtually with no hardware on the square. The Geran-5 resembles the Iranian Karrar, ranges roughly 1,000 km at 600 km/h with a 90 kg warhead, and is built with Chinese components.
Beyond the line of contact, the Regional Center for Human Rights (RCHR) released a report documenting how Russia has systematically dismantled Ukraine's legal order in occupied territories — replacing courts, police, citizenship and education with Russian institutions, and with widespread human-rights violations recorded by name and case in the document. The day adds another piece of evidence to the post-truce file Kyiv is building for any negotiation that does actually arrive.
