Turkey warns against resumption of US-Iran war, Iran issues ultimatum on peace proposal

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Tuesday that Ankara supports efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and warned against a resumption of the US-Iran war, speaking at a joint press conference in Doha with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued an ultimatum for the US to accept Tehran's 14-point peace proposal or face "failure," as a fragile cease-fire since April 8 remains on "life support" according to US President Donald Trump. Fidan also warned against "Israeli expansionism" and said Israel was the "elephant in the room," while both Turkey and Qatar backed Pakistan's mediation efforts to end the conflict.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Tuesday that Ankara supports efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and warned against a resumption of the US-Iran war, speaking at a joint press conference in Doha alongside Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

Fidan said the Strait of Hormuz should not be used as a "weapon" and that it was "highly essential for regional stability, security, as well as the global economy." He stated: "The war is not a solution. It brings about global instability, economic deprivation and potential devastation." Fidan also warned against "Israeli expansionism," calling Israel the "elephant in the room." He noted that "expansionism in Gaza, Beirut, the West Bank and Syria has cost many lives and forced many more to flee home."

Sheikh Mohammed said Qatar and Turkey supported Pakistan's mediation to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He warned Iran not to "blackmail the Gulf countries" through Hormuz and mentioned his recent visit to Washington to support mediation efforts.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued an ultimatum for the US to accept Tehran's 14-point peace proposal. "There is no alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people as laid out in the 14-point proposal. Any other approach will be completely inconclusive; nothing but one failure after another," Ghalibaf said. US President Donald Trump said the fragile cease-fire in place since April 8 was on "life support."

Iran has choked traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the US has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The war on Iran has cost the US $29 billion so far. Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for Iran's parliamentary national security commission, wrote on X: "One of Iran's options in the event of another attack could be 90 percent enrichment. We will examine it in parliament." Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% purity is a key sticking point in negotiations.
