Turkey begins development of naval variant of HÜRJET jet trainer for MUGEM aircraft carrier

Turkey has officially started work on a shipborne variant of the HÜRJET supersonic jet trainer and light attack aircraft, according to a May 15 report by TRT Haber. The naval version will feature strengthened landing gear, an arresting hook, and corrosion protection for carrier operations. The variant is intended for the future MUGEM aircraft carrier, whose planned air wing also includes the KIZILELMA unmanned jet and the TB-3 UCAV.

Turkey has officially initiated development of a shipborne variant of the HÜRJET supersonic jet trainer and light attack aircraft, according to a May 15 report by state broadcaster TRT Haber. The naval version is designed to operate from the future MUGEM aircraft carrier and will incorporate modifications including strengthened landing gear and airframe structure, the addition of an arresting hook, and protective measures against salt, humidity, and corrosion.

The arresting hook system will allow the aircraft to stop quickly after deck landings, requiring careful integration with the airframe and a dedicated testing phase before operational use. The “marinization” process addresses the effects of salt air and moisture on both external surfaces and internal systems, aiming to ensure long-term reliability and easier maintenance.

Under current plans, the MUGEM carrier’s air wing will comprise a naval HÜRJET, the KIZILELMA unmanned jet aircraft, and the TB-3 UCAV. The naval HÜRJET is expected to support training and operational roles, including pilot preparation for more complex aircraft in a naval environment, as well as attack or support missions when higher-end platforms are not required.

Separately, HÜRJET has secured its first export customer. Spain selected the aircraft for its advanced jet trainer requirement, with a contract signed involving Airbus. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028, with a total of 30 aircraft expected over the following years. The export to an EU/NATO member state marks a milestone for Turkey’s defense and aerospace industry and provides a clearer production outlook for the program, which will continue alongside the naval variant work.
