Met officers arrest 44-year-old at Euston near "Unite the Kingdom" march meeting point over Stirchley van collision
Met Police on Saturday morning arrested a 44-year-old man at Euston station near the meeting point of the "Unite the Kingdom" march on suspicion of wounding after a van ran over a pedestrian in the Birmingham suburb of Stirchley on Thursday night, West Midlands police said. A man in his 30s was struck on Mayfield Road after flags had been removed from lamp-posts, suffering a broken leg that required surgery, and remains in hospital. A second man was arrested at the march on suspicion of encouraging people to attack a police officer; the van failed to stop at the scene but was recovered on nearby Prince Road and is being examined.
A 44-year-old man was arrested in London on Saturday morning on suspicion of wounding over a van collision in the Birmingham suburb of Stirchley on Thursday night that left a pedestrian seriously injured, West Midlands police said.
Met officers detained the suspect at Euston station, near the meeting point of the "Unite the Kingdom" march; a second man was arrested at the same location on suspicion of encouraging people to attack a police officer. The Birmingham suspect will be questioned by West Midlands officers in due course.
The collision occurred on Mayfield Road in Stirchley after flags had been removed from lamp-posts. The victim, a man in his 30s, suffered a broken leg that required surgery and remained in hospital. "A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding following a collision involving a van and a pedestrian in Stirchley on Thursday night," a West Midlands police spokesperson said. "The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, suffered leg injuries in the collision on Mayfield Road and remains in hospital."
The van failed to stop at the scene but was recovered on nearby Prince Road and is being examined. Officers are reviewing CCTV and social media footage, and have asked anyone with information to call 101 quoting log 5802 of 14 May.
