On January 27, jury selection officially began at the Superior Court of Los Angeles County in the United States. This is not an ordinary product liability lawsuit. On the plaintiff's side are hundreds of American families and over 250 school districts; on the defendant's side are the legal teams of Meta, YouTube (owned by Google), and TikTok (owned by ByteDance). The core accusation strikes at the heart of the tech industry: did these companies intentionally design their social products to be addictive and psychologically harmful to teenagers for the sake of profit? Just before the trial began, Snap (the parent company of Snapchat) and TikTok reached confidential settlements with the bellwether plaintiffs in this case, choosing to withdraw from this first jury trial. The remaining defendants, Meta and YouTube, will face a judicial battle expected to last six to eight weeks, which could reshape the global social media business model.

Specifically alleged features include infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, push notifications, and recommendation algorithms designed to maximize user retention. The complaint alleges that these features directly interact with the brain's reward system (dopamine secretion), posing a disproportionate risk to adolescents whose prefrontal cortex is still developing.
The benchmark plaintiff in this case is a 19-year-old woman from Chico, California, referred to in court documents only by her initials, K.G.M. Her experience has been described by the plaintiff's attorney, Matthew Bergman, as emblematic of a generation of lost children. According to court filings, K.G.M. began watching YouTube at age 6, started uploading content at 8, owned her first iPhone and registered on Instagram at 9, and joined Snapchat at 13. She claims that this led to nearly constant scrolling, posting, anxiety over engagement metrics, along with bullying from peers, malicious comments from strangers, and sexual advances from adult men. Her mother testified that her daughter suffers from long-term memory impairment, cannot be separated from her phone, and experiences emotional breakdowns when it is taken away, as if someone had died. K.G.M. herself stated in her testimony: I wish I had never downloaded it.
Internal documents and the allegations of "informed decision-making."
The explosive potential of the case lies partly in the large number of internal company documents that are about to be unsealed. Julia Duncan, a lawyer from the American Association for Justice, revealed that one document shows an Instagram employee referring to the app as a drug, while another employee commented, "Haha, we're basically drug dealers." If presented in court, these internal communications would strongly support the plaintiffs' allegations that the company was aware.
Sacha Haworth, Executive Director of the Tech Oversight Project, commented after Snap and TikTok reached settlements one after another: Unless you don't want those things to be made public, you wouldn't choose to settle... The public doesn't really know what's coming. This suggests that the defendant companies may face highly damaging risks of evidence disclosure.
The defendant firmly denies that its products are intended to harm children. In a statement, Meta emphasized its long-standing commitment to supporting young people and argued that attributing youth mental health issues solely to social media oversimplifies a serious problem. Google spokesperson José Castañeda stated that the allegations are completely unfounded, noting that YouTube has always prioritized providing a safer and healthier experience as a core mission. In their legal defense, in addition to invoking Section 230, tech companies are expected to emphasize that mental health issues stem from complex causes—including academic pressure, campus safety, socioeconomic challenges, and other factors—making it difficult to establish a direct causal link between social media and specific harms.
Industry Earthquake: From Legal Defense to Business Model Challenges
This trial is referred to as epoch-making by observers because it may shake the very foundation on which the social media industry relies—the advertising business model based on user attention and engagement. Eric Goldman, a law professor at Santa Clara University, points out that losing in court could pose an existential threat to social media companies. If the jury rules that the product designs of these companies are inherently flawed and harmful, it will set a precedent, leading to thousands of subsequent similar lawsuits flooding in.
In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg. In June of this year, another landmark federal trial will commence in Oakland, California, representing numerous school districts suing social media platforms for harming children. Additionally, attorneys general from over 40 states have filed a joint lawsuit against Meta, accusing it of intentionally designing features of Instagram and Facebook to addict children and exacerbate the youth mental health crisis. New Mexico will also begin selecting a jury next week for a separate case alleging that Meta failed to protect young users from sexual exploitation.
From a broader regulatory trend perspective, public sentiment and legislative direction are shifting. A study by the Pew Research Center last spring showed that about half of American teenagers believe social media is harmful to people their age, interfering with sleep and impairing productivity. Australia has already enacted legislation prohibiting children under 16 from using social media, and the UK is considering similar measures. New York State passed the "SAFE for Kids Act" in 2024, directly intervening in platform design by limiting addictive algorithmic feeds for minors and prohibiting sending nighttime notifications to minors without verifiable parental consent.
Beyond Adjudication: The Dawn of a Global Regulatory Paradigm Shift
Regardless of the final outcome of the Los Angeles trial, it marks a critical turning point: the focus of accountability for tech giants is shifting from traditional content moderation to deeper product architecture and business model design. It is no longer about whether a violent or harmful video is promptly removed, but about whether underlying interaction logics like infinite scroll and autoplay inherently exploit the cognitive vulnerabilities of adolescents.
George Washington University Law School professor Mary Anne Franks pointed out: The tech industry has always received preferential treatment—I think we are starting to see this change. This trial forces the court and the public to examine a fundamental question: Where does the boundary of corporate responsibility lie when the core design logic of a service conflicts with public health goals, especially the protection of minors?
From a strategic perspective, Snap and TikTok's last-minute decision to settle is a risk control strategy, avoiding the exposure of core secrets in open court and preventing the potentially catastrophic precedent effect of losing the first case. In contrast, Meta and YouTube's choice to fight is a high-stakes gamble, betting that the jury will find it difficult to legally establish a causal link between design and harm, and believing that the protection of Section 230 remains effective.
The showdown unfolding in the Los Angeles courtroom will have implications far beyond its four walls. It is redefining product liability in the digital age and may compel social media companies worldwide to rewrite their algorithms—not merely adjusting content policies, but fundamentally redesigning the core mechanisms that attract and retain users.
