According to a report by AFP on a certain month and day, Iran is considering an extreme solution to address issues such as traffic congestion and land subsidence in Tehran—relocating the capital to a completely different location on the Gulf of Oman.

It is reported that since the Islamic Revolution, the idea of relocating the capital has surfaced on various occasions, but due to significant financial and logistical obstacles, the proposals have been dismissed as impractical.

Recently, reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who took office last month, revived this idea citing the increasingly severe challenges Tehran faces. These challenges include traffic congestion, water shortages, poor resource management, severe air pollution, and land subsidence—the gradual sinking of the ground caused by natural processes or human activities.

In September of this year, government spokesperson Fatima Muhajerani stated that authorities were studying the possibility of relocation. She said, "The Makran region is being seriously considered." However, she did not provide a specific timeline.

The report introduces that Makran is a largely undeveloped coastal area in the Gulf of Oman, spanning parts of the impoverished Sistan and Baluchestan Province and the neighboring Hormozgan Province in southern Iran. The Makran region has been considered multiple times as a preferred destination for relocating the capital.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a speech one day, "Makran, this 'lost paradise', must be transformed into the future economic hub for Iran and the region."

Reports indicate that the revival of the capital relocation plan has reignited debates over its necessity, with many emphasizing Tehran's historical and strategic significance.
